Job Description
Position Summary
The Heavy Forklift Operator is responsible for safely receiving, inspecting, handling, organizing, and moving incoming steel materials throughout the yard and shop. This position ensures delivered materials meet stated requirements, maintains accurate material placement, and supports daily shipping, receiving, and production operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Inspect incoming steel materials and compare deliveries against the bill of lading and specified requirements.
Identify material discrepancies, damage, or other delivery issues and work with delivery drivers and management to resolve them.
Safely operate heavy forklifts and other material-handling equipment.
Unload incoming steel shipments and load outgoing shipping trucks.
Move and place steel materials in designated yard and storage locations.
Maintain an organized and accessible material yard.
Stack and organize steel materials safely and efficiently.
Palletize materials as required for production or shipment.
Keep steel and other materials continuously supplied to shop workstations.
Assist with preparing materials for production and shipment.
Follow all company safety procedures and forklift operating requirements.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
Communicate material and shipping concerns promptly to the Traffic Manager or appropriate personnel.
Perform other material-handling and yard duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Previous forklift or heavy equipment operating experience preferred.
Ability to safely handle and move heavy steel materials.
Ability to read and verify bills of lading and shipping documentation.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with drivers, coworkers, and management.
Commitment to following safety procedures and maintaining a safe work environment.
Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
Ability to perform physical tasks associated with loading, unloading, stacking, and organizing materials.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials as required.
Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and climb throughout the workday.
Ability to work around heavy machinery, steel materials, trucks, and other industrial equipment.
Ability to safely perform job duties in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Duties/Responsibilities:
? Ensures delivered material meets stated requirements.
? Checks material to ensure lengths, type, and grade to ensure it meets stated requirements.
? Positions material in yard for preproduction staging.
? Ensure staged material is properly stored to reduce damage and contamination.
? Problem solving skills are necessary to determine and fix poor instruction files.
? Work with operators to resolve staging and sequencing issues.
? Operate material handling equipment safely.
? Stage material on appropriate dunnage to reduce damage.
? Be able to work with supervisor and foremen in staging needed beams, plate, and angle iron.
? Ensure job numbers are placed on bundled items.
? Ensure the yard is kept free of obstructions and kept clean.

? Ability to organize a large layout area with ease of retrieval and sequencing.

Education and Experience:
? Proven experience with Heavy Forklift Operating (Warehouse forklift operating does not meet this requirement).
