GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The Mortgage Loan Underwriter, Jr. will process and underwrite residential mortgage loans. The file will then be submitted to an underwriter for final approval.  The underwriter will review the file and approve, add or make changes to the conditions as needed on the file.  The goal of this position is to advance the individual over time to an underwriter.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Process the file verifying credit, income and assets. This duty is performed daily, about 15% of the time.

2. Underwrite Conventional, FHA, VA and Rural Development loans, by analyzing the borrower's credit to determine if the borrower has the capacity and the willingness to repay the loan. This duty is performed daily, about 20% of the time.

3. Underwrite mortgage loan applications and evaluate loans in order to maximize organizational profit and minimize risk or loss. This duty is performed daily, about 20% of the time.

4. Examine appraisals to ascertain that the subject property of the loan is adequate security for the loan. This duty is performed daily, about 10% of the time.

5. Confirm that all documents in the underwriting package are in compliance and that all facets of the loan meet application program guidelines for various investors and government programs. This duty is performed daily, about 5% of the time.

6. Perform daily duties on all bank systems and Mortgage operating systems needed. This duty is performed daily, about 5% of the time.

7. Identify cross selling opportunities. This duty is performed daily, about 5% of the time.

8. Undertake underwriting training as assigned to ensure complete knowledge of products and guidelines. This duty is performed daily, about 10% of the time.

9. Serve as a resource for loan officers and processors in resolving problems with mortgage loan files. This duty is performed daily, about 5% of the time.

10. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.

11. Completes required BSA/AML training and other compliance training as assigned. This duty is performed as needed.

12. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Broad knowledge of such fields as accounting, marketing, business administration, finance, etc. Equivalent to a four year college degree, plus 3 years related experience and/or training, and 7 to 11 months related management experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy/procedure manuals;  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
