This is an entry level, part time temporary, hourly position.

FUNCTION OF JOB: Assist in maintaining the Northwoods Trails System and other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION: Reports to and is responsible to the Northwoods Trails Systems Specialist.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Trail maintenance work including, but not limited to, erosion control, trimming vegetation, trail analysis, materials transport, and the proper and safe use of tools, materials, and other equipment. These activities can include mowing, pruning, sawing, clearing culverts or creek crossings of debris, water bar rehabilitation, raking, shoveling, leaf blowing, trash pickup, port-a-pot cleaning, and other duties as assigned. Daily work may involve any or all of these specific tasks at various dates and times.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

• Ability to work effectively with others in a team environment
• Ability to stay on task and work on trail maintenance tasks independently
• Ability to operate equipment and perform manual labor for long hours outside; exhibit a range from competency to proficiency operating various mechanical and manual trail building tools
• Familiar with machine and tool preventative maintenance techniques
• Strong attention to detail and strong work ethic
• Willingness to learn and review by participating in the training necessary to do proper trail work
• Possess a valid Arkansas driver's license and ability to drive a side by side vehicle
• Able to take written and verbal direction from Supervisors to complete project goals
• Able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
• Able to interact with the general public, customers, volunteers, and employees with tact and courtesy
• Able to change activity frequently and cope with interruptions.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The Northwoods Trails Maintenance Assistant works primarily in the field out on the trail. Works nights, weekends and holidays as needed. The weekly work schedule will vary.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Motorized vehicles and equipment, including generators and common hand and power tools. Other equipment can include trail counters, laptop computers, hand held radios, phones, and GPS units.

PHYSICAL DEMAND: The physical demands of this position will range from light to arduous exertion. Trail maintenance often involves frequent stooping, lifting, reaching, bending, carrying, and repetitive motion. Distances walked and ridden may frequently exceed several miles per day, often while carrying tools and other equipment. Lifting 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
