The Sustainability Data Scientist will be responsible for developing, implementing, analyzing and interpreting complex datasets related to environmental impact, resource usage, and sustainability initiatives. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, analytical skills and a strong understanding of sustainability concepts and GHG accounting methodologies. The role combines passion for agriculture, climate impact and the environment with analytical capabilities to lead data analysis and insight generation across Tyson Foods' carbon accounting processes in operations and regenerative agriculture efforts. The work connects cutting edge science and research with quantification methodologies at scale through disciplinary work. You will lead the development of Tyson Foods' annual global GHG emissions footprint through leading the data collection and analysis of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions as well as conducting life cycle analyses (LCA's) of key animal and crop production systems.
Sustainability Data Scientist role key deliverables:
- Develop and implement Tyson's Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG accounting strategy in alignment with overall business and commercialization goals.
- Measure Tyson's annual Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG footprint according to GHG Protocol or other commonly recognized GHG accounting methodologies, ensuring full documentation and data validation.
- Provide data management, file management and organization support to centralize data in preparation of GHG inventory assurance and mandatory GHG or regulatory disclosures.
- Conduct LCA's across the company, for specific product categories or brands.
- Advise in foundational LCA framework decisions for program development across farm animal and row crop sectors.
- Develop specifications for engineers around LCA system boundaries, LCA impact assessment methods, and allocation/co-product procedures for various programs.
- Develop predictive models and GHG emissions consulting to assess the impact of sustainability initiatives and recommend strategies for improvement.
- Create data visualizations and reports to communicate findings and insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Assist in the development of strategies and initiatives based on data driven insights.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and recommend strategies for improvement.
- Stay current with industry trends and best practices in sustainability and data analysis.
Required experience and skills:
- Expected 5-8 years of experience in this type of work.
- Bachelor's degree in data science, environmental science, statistics, accounting or related field - Master's preferred.
- High level of expertise in GHG accounting principles and standards such as the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064, FLAG Guidance; LCA methodologies; and GHG emissions databases such as eGrid, ecoinvent, GLEAM, GaBi or US LCI.
- Experience conducting Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG footprints and LCAs in an industry setting (advanced academia experiences can apply).
- Experience with GHG accounting software.
- Strong communication skills, with ability to present complex data in a clear and concise manner.
- Proven experience in data analysis, statistical modeling, data visualization.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms is a plus.
- Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, R, or SQL
- Experience with modern web technologies and project management software (Jira, Confluence); familiarity with Agile systems and matrixed organizations is a plus.
