Purpose and Essential Duties

The Fire Protection Designer IV designs structures, products, components, or assemblies using engineering and architectural principles. Performs technical activities on assigned projects under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).

Specific responsibilities include:

+ Works closely with the creative team to ensure the successful execution of goals of all assigned projects.

+ Influences stylistic direction for projects.

+ Delivers concepts and designs according to strict project deadlines.

+ Contributes to all areas of the creative process and department.

+ Assign work to others in the Fire Protection discipline of the company.

+ Performs work with a high degree of latitude.

+ Handles the most complex issues.

+ Provides leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group. May act as a lead or first-level supervisor.

+ Participates in job site surveys, job meetings, note-taking, and discussions associated with design projects.

+ Maintain a high level of understanding and use of the latest drafting software maintained by BTME, particularly for Fire Protection design, including Revit, AutoCAD, or other software packages.

+ Stay informed of NFPA requirements and a working knowledge of the International Fire Code as well as applicable local codes and standards applicable to Fire Protection Systems, while maintaining a high level of output/production.

+ Work through Fire Protection Designs quickly and with certainty in order to provide clear, concise direction to other employees.

+ Prepares specifications.

+ Designs and assists in the preparation of drawings for Fire Protection systems for building projects including conducting code review, sprinkler calculations, standpipe, and sprinkler system layout, etc.

+ Attends meetings with owners, clients, and/or architects as needed; and prepares meeting notes.

+ Conducts site surveys to determine existing facility conditions and specific client needs.

+ Conducts meetings, taking notes, and preparing assignment lists as necessary for a project.

+ Takes a leading role in the education of other employees.

+ Assists the design team in coordination with other disciplines (structural architectural, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, civil, etc.).

+ Performs project job site visits during construction to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications, owner expectations, and building codes. Prepares punch lists and project observation reports to note findings.

+ Performs review of shop drawings, hydraulic calculations, material data review, and seismic bracing calculation reviews.

+ Actively attends in-house training sessions to obtain knowledge in necessary technical areas.

+ Writes narratives for projects.

+ Performs assessments of existing conditions and is able to participate in the activity of the production of the assessment written document.

+ Provides supervisory duties to other staff as needed.

+ Other duties as assigned.

This position is Full-Time, Exempt, and reports to the Engineering Director.

Required Education, Experience, and Qualifications

+ Associate’s degree from a technical school with a focus on Revit or 10 years’ experience using Revit or other design software.

+ 6+ years of Fire Protection design experience

+ Strong technical skills

+ Vision and Creativity

+ Planning skills with the ability to meet deadlines

+ Leadership skills

+ Possess expert knowledge of the subject matter

+ Expert proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) and pdf

+ Expert proficiency with Revit (AutoCAD beneficial)

+ NICET Certification in Water-Based Systems Layout

+ Detail-oriented and willing to tackle various ongoing projects in a fast-paced environment.

+ Excellent multitasking skills, with the ability to perform duties outside of the scope of work when necessary

+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills

+ Able to comprehend code terminology and possess the skills necessary to apply the code or standards

Preferred Education, Experience, and Qualifications

+ NICET III or IV Certification

+ Bachelor of Science Degree

+ Licensed Fire Protection Engineer

+ 10+ years’ experience in Fire Sprinkler Design

Travel Requirements

+ Depending on project need and location, estimated to be around 5% – 10% of regular work schedule per month, sometimes including overnight out of state. Must be able to travel by plane and/ or automobile. A valid driver’s license is required.

Physical/Work Environment Requirements

+ Long periods of sitting or standing at a desk in front of a computer in the office environment.

+ Ability to walk, climb, crawl, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and squat, as conditions require on a project site.

+ May be exposed to inclement weather.

+ Capable of field surveying, measure and accurately document job site conditions, and record site observation photos.

+ Must be able to climb a ladder on job sites
