Summary This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Southeast Area, Location Support Service in Stoneville, MS. In this position, you will provide technical support and perform a variety of duties in support of the maintenance and regeneration of plants. Responsibilities Installs and repair irrigation lines, spray heads, water valves and other irrigation specialty parts. Observes signs of abnormal development in plantings. Operates a tree lift to prune trees for correct growth habit and trim back away from buildings. Prepares soils for planting, including the incorporation of necessary fertilizer, organic matter, and other soils amendments for growing various plant types. Lifts and loads bales of straw, moves heavy freight, machinery and other very heavy items by using hand trucks and other moving equipment to and from various locations. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 12/02/2022. Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Gardener (Tractor Operator) without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Physical Effort: Incumbent exerts very heavy physical effort in: lifting and carrying bags of fertilizers, trees, shrubs, seed and other landscape materials and equipment frequently weighing over 80 lbs, which will not be on an everyday basis. Work requires frequent stooping, bending, reaching and arm and leg movements to operate equipment and controls. Often works in bent, cramped, and otherwise uncomfortable positions where substantial’s physical effort is exerted in performing duties. Working Environment: Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Incumbent is subject to any prevailing weather conditions and noise, dust, dirt, drafts and standing for long periods of time. Equipment, vehicles, and tools used require special alertness and care to avoid accidents and serious injury. Must observe safety rules and regulations in the performance of assigned duties. Education This position does not have an education qualification requirement.
