Job Description
Provides age-specific direct and indirect patient care Responsible for the collection, labeling, and transport of specimens to the appropriate areas of the laboratory.
Obtains blood specimens by established venipuncture and capillary techniques. Obtains outpatient urine specimens (sometimes with direct observation) and buccal swabs. Labels specimens according to policy and distributes to appropriate testing areas of laboratory. Completes essential records such as chain of custody forms. May check picture identification, obtain photographs, and fingerprints. Enters and retrieves computer data. Charting laboratory reports not available through the computer. Inform nursing personnel of panic value point of care testing results. Maintain confidentiality and be aware of patient’s rights. Document appropriately and legibly.
Minimum Education
High School diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
Required Skills
Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy certification preferred. Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Makes decisions and established work priorities on essentially procedure-oriented functions. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Mathematical skills: basic addition and subtraction.
