Job Description

The Zhou lab in the department of Computational Biology is seeking a candidate passionate in promoting biomedical and cancer research and addressing big data challenges from the unique perspective of scientific data visualization. Dr. Zhou leads a team of bioinformatics scientists and web developers to investigate and implement cutting edge methodologies to utilize multi-omics data in cancer and population science. This position will join the efforts to develop the ProteinPaint visual-analytical system, by working inside an agile team with diverse engineering and scientific backgrounds. The candidate will contribute or lead development of novel applications to empower scientists and clinicians at the forefront of genomic research into catastrophic childhood diseases. The candidate will do so by adhering to the standard of our work to achieve the best quality, to carefully test and document, with full attention to details.

The department provides a highly interactive environment with collaborative opportunities across basic and clinical departments, access to high performance computing clusters, cloud computing environment, innovative visualization tools, highly automated analytical pipelines and mentorship from faculty scientists with deep experience in data analysis, data management, and delivery of high-quality results for highly competitive projects. This position is located in Memphis, TN, and relocation assistance is available.

Recognized as a world leader in mapping the genetic landscape of pediatric cancers, the St. Jude department of Computational Biology has developed state-of-art computational infrastructure, well-established analytical pipelines, and deep genomic analysis expertise with a track record of high-impact publications in top-tier biomedical journals such as Nature, NEJM, JAMA, Nature Genetics, and Nature Methods.

Works in conjunction with other team members to implement, test, and maintain the ProteinPaint application.

+ Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field is required

+ Master’s degree or PHD is preferred

+ Five (5) years of internet development experienced is required.

+ One year of internet development experience is acceptable with a Master’s degree.

+ Zero years of internet development experience may be acceptable with a PhD.

Preferred Skills:

+ Experience in PHP, JavaScript, modern JavaScript frameworks, and AJAX preferred.

+ Experience in Object Oriented Programming preferred.

+ Experience in Database Design and Programming preferred.

+ Experience in Bioinformatics preferred

+ Experience in R, Rust, SQL preferred.

+ Knowledege in bioinformatics and sequencing data analysis is highly preferred

+ Knowledge and skill in coding in high level programming languages.

+ Knowledge of agile development and team coding using GitHub.

+ Ability to talk to scientists and medical staff to ascertain requirements and feedback.

+ Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

+ Ability to communicate concepts to non-technical personnel.

+ Ability to work independently and as a member of a team; Must be self-motivated.

+ Knowledge of Next Generation Sequencing data and analyses a plus.

+ Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations and to defuse potentially confrontational interactions with peers and customers.

+ Ability to understand scientific problems related to biomedical research.

+ Ability to understand the basic concept of statistical analysis for large-scale data.
