Job Description

The Fiber Technician is responsible for wiring fiber jumpers in OLT buildings and distribution cabinets and verifying that proper light readings at the cabinet ports and NAP ports. Fiber Technician must be able to comprehend trace tables, fiber assignments, port assignments, and use power light and OTDR meters. This role supports getting a clean fiber connection to the customer's serving NAP to ensure a quality experience for the customer, and to set the drop and installation personnel for success.



High school diploma or GED


Excellent communication skills and previous technical experience of successfully installing and repairing fiber applications for FTTH and FTTB. Practical experience of electric utility construction is preferred. Must demonstrate knowledge of outside fiber plant materials and telecommunications engineering and construction practices. Minimum of 1 years of working experience in a related field or role.


Should be able to quickly develop a working knowledge of Cooperative procedures, practices and policies. Must be able to perform the core elements of the position competently, following a training period not to exceed 90 days. Knowledge of CAD and GIS platforms used in engineering, design, and work management. Working knowledge of fiber optic network design, various FTTX architectures, and fiber splicing.



Should be able to lift or carry 50 LBS. Should have strong computer skills and ability to learn new software and skilled in all Microsoft Offices software. Skills required for using some basic IP routing and troubleshooting, inside wiring practices, modem and wireless access point installation, and basic hand tool and power tools experience. Ability to possess knowledge of RUS, ANSI, NEC, and NESC specifications, rules, and standards. Must possess a valid driver's license. This is a safety sensitive position where the employee holding this position has the responsibility for his/her own safety or other people's safety.

Working Conditions

Combination of inside and outside work subject to work on weekends, at night and during severe storm conditions. This position subject to residency requirements for response purposes.
