Job Description

The Medical Coding Specialist is responsible for maximizing cash inflows through evaluating, researching, and coding of all medical services, supplies, mileage and support-related charges that are appropriate for each medical record. The coding process involves researching, analyzing and assigning specific medical billing information to each medical record, as necessary to accomplish the task of properly billing the intended recipient, while maintaining compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.


+ Accurate medical coding assignment to medical records that reflects the actual services, supplies, and support charges for the medical procedure completed

+ Accumulating additional information as necessary to substantiate the medical necessity of the transport

+ Data entry into the computer system

+ Researching resources for the proper assignment of medical procedures, supplies and support charges

+ Follow up calls, inquiries and clarifications to support the medical record

+ Documentation of process into the patient account computer record

+ Maintenance of the patient medical and billing records

+ Maintenance of files relating to correspondence

+ Making adjusting entries to patient’s accounts to conform with required Medicare and Medicaid regulations

+ Attending training, auditing and process improvement meetings as required

+ Other duties as deemed necessary


+ High School Education

+ Accurate typing at least 30 wpm

+ Proficient in oral and written communications, especially telephone

+ Proficient in the use of computers

+ Three-years Medical Coding Experience (preferred)

+ ICD-10 Coding Experience (preferred)

+ Experience with Medicare part B, Medicaid, Commercial insurance, and Fair Debt Collection Law (preferred)

+ Effective knowledge of EMS (preferred)
