Position Summary:

The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Accreditation and Assessment leads university efforts to improve student learning by working with individual faculty, departments, and colleges to develop and implement strategies that lead to course and program curricular and co-curricular improvement. The Assistant Vice Chancellor works under the leadership of the Provost and is responsible for leading assessment of the general education program, serving as the Arkansas Division of Higher Education (ADHE) liaison for regional and professional accreditation activities, including Higher Learning Commission accreditation, managing and coordinating the reporting of program reviews to ADHE, and for conducting research on student learning at Arkansas State University.

Through these activities, the Assistant Vice Chancellor fosters the development of a collaborative accreditation and assessment culture emphasizing continuous improvement of the quality of undergraduate and graduate education and co-curricular experiences at Arkansas State. Additionally, the Assistant Vice Chancellor is responsible for testing services for placement, admissions, and select licensures.

Duties & Responsibilities:

+ Serves as Accreditation Liaison Officer for the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and fulfills that role by gathering information for assurance argument, analyzing accreditation policy for various groups needing regional accreditation information, filing all substantive change documents, communicating federal compliance policies, assisting with implementation of new accreditation criteria, and leading the assurance argument

+ Leads the Assessment Services and Testing Center staff to include: assistant director, research assistant, computer operators, graduate assistants, support staff, and student workers

+ Works with faculty, departments, and colleges to develop and implement assessment plans at the course and programmatic level

+ Develops and implements a critical comprehensive assessment strategy for general education that leads to continuous improvement of the program

+ Provides sound analysis of assessment data to inform academic decision making at the course, department, college, and university level, as well as co-curricular experiences

+ Conducts faculty/staff workshops on assessment and on the integration of assessment and course and curricular design

+ Works with faculty and colleges to secure external funding for course and curricular improvements

+ Actively disseminates assessment findings to inform the university community of practices and innovations that lead to improved student learning, and that contribute to organizational learning on facilitating student learning

+ Develops assessment databases and other technology that provide reports on student learning to individual students, to faculty leading courses, to academic programs, and to university administrators

+ Maintains and manages syllabi archives for campus

+ Manages and coordinates the reporting of program reviews to ensure the university’s compliance with ADHE requirements

+ Assumes leadership of the Testing Center, and other special projects as assigned by the Provost

+ Other duties as assigned


Strong knowledge and understanding of institutional and discipline-specific accreditation criteria

Conduct faculty/staff workshops on assessment and related topics; assist with faculty development activities

Understanding of institutional, program, and classroom assessment

Strong interpersonal and team-building skills

Knowledge and understanding of program review processes

Knowledge and understanding of testing services, processes, and licenses

Excellent skills in data collection, management, and analysis

General Days/Hours:

Monday – Friday

8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Additional hours as requested and/or needed

Ability to lead a campus-wide effort to foster and improve the assessment culture of the institution through a collaborative process involving faculty, staff, and students

Assist colleges/departments in the development and implementation of unit program assessment

Assist co-curricular units in the development and implementation of unit program assessment

Effectively analyze, report, and use assessment results to assist faculty and administration in improving educational programs and student learning outcomes

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Master’s Degree with three (3) years of experience in:

1. Regional accreditation processes

2. Student learning outcomes assessment, program evaluation, measurement, or equivalent assessment experience

Experience in assessment associated with traditional, blended, and online delivery of academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels

Demonstrated experience promoting and sustaining a campus-wide culture of assessment, program review, and accreditation

Demonstrated leadership capabilities and proven record of working collaboratively and effectively with faculty, staff, students and administrators

Excellent decision-making, verbal, organizational, and written communication skills
